Last Year Was A Big One In George
In 2009 the Community of George opened their arms and their hearts to visitors returning to help celebrate the 125th Celebration. We were happy to showcase the improvements that the community has made showing of a progressive community.
George Community Economic Development Corporation
The George Community Economic Development Corporation (GCED) is very active in promoting business growth in our community. There is an initiation membership fee of $100, followed with a yearly fee of $50. The membership fees are used in support of a variety of activities that promote business and community development. This organization is governed by a Board of Directors who meets monthly to keep abreast of current issues. The board would like to thank you for your support and are working hard to serve the community. This newsletter highlights many of the programs and projects GCED has been successfully promoting to improve the economic climate in George.
Locker Park
Locker Park welcomed home Bob Locker, former professional baseball player, to dedicate the Industrial/Commercial Park developed on the home place. Currently two businesses are located in the park and a 40’x60’ spec building is waiting for a tenant who will take the opportunity given to form a new business in George. Many lots are available for new development.
The park saw the completion of a pond with a water fountain feature as well as renovated historical light poles lighting this area at night. The recreational trail encircles the pond and leads to the north portion of the park where the trail loop around the community is completed. This area is a welcome sight to anyone entering the community from the north.
Sunset Addition
The George Economic Development Corporation continues to encourage development of new houses in the Sunset Addition on the west side of George. If you are considering building a new home, here is an offer you will want to consider.
Currently, seven lots are being reduced to 60% of the current asking price with 10% rebate when the house is completed. Each lot will have a cash price available at approximately 55%. The Development Corp will finance lots at 50% down. Individuals who finance a lot may have up to five years to retire the balance. The interest rate is determined by the retirement schedule. These lots are ready for development which means that curb/gutter, water, sewer, gas and electricity are already in place. All you need to do is to connect to them. This is a limited time offer.
If you are interested, you may call Tim DeBruin at Otter Valley Real Estate or speak to one of the board members – Jerry Nichols, Judd Reifers, Jeff Schrick or Craig Madsen. You can call the city office at 475-3612 for more details.
New Businesses-
We are happy to welcome The Flower Box to Main Street in George, Iowa. Norma Winkel opened the doors to this business in the fall of 2009 and is offering a full line of flowers, gift items, balloons, cards, tuxedo rentals and more. Stop in to see her at 133 N Main Street and welcome this new business to our community.
Mike Hilbrands moved back to George where his roots began. He brings the sale of Pioneer Seeds to the agriculture industry in serving the farmers in and around George. We are always happy to welcome back those who left the community and then are returning to offer their services. You may visit with Mike at 105 S Main Street where his office sets in the Hair Hut building.
Business Improvements-
Sudenga Industries, the Number 1 employer in Lyon County, did a major expansion project adding three new production buildings and pouring yards of concrete. This expansion is providing more space for the manufacturing of their products. New machines and equipment were also added for increased production. Along with these expansions, they have hired more employees. This company, which has been in existence for over 125 years, continues to offer more job opportunities through their growth in service and products.
Two Main Street businesses renovated their store fronts before the 125th celebration. The Pizza Ranch replaced front windows, re-sided and re-shingled the store front giving a welcoming invitation to all Pizza lovers. The Flower Box also replaced the front windows, added new flower boxes and continue to provide a window view of their many products.
Premier Communication upgraded the service they provide to the George community by adding cell phones, telephone lines, and internet service to their cable service. A full service package is now available to all citizens.
Altell cell phone services installed a new cell tower east of the city where cell phone service is readily available at all times.
Community Improvements Completed and Scheduled for Summer of 2010
Along with the George Community Economic Development Corporation, City officials continue to update community projects to offer a better quality of life for the citizens. Some of the improvements are:
Ø The Recreational Trail volunteers completed the construction of the 4 mile trail that encircles the community. The trail can be accessed at any point in the community providing a safe and affordable form of exercise or leisurely enjoyment. All funds were donated and all labor was volunteered! This speaks volumes about the citizens in George in their support in turning a dream into a reality.
Ø The Shelter Houses in the parks have been re-sided and the roofs have been repaired. These updates offer a friendly, clean area for gatherings of all sorts.
Ø A USDA Grant made it possible to purchase a 2009 Fire Truck helping our Fire Department offer a top notch protection service to our community and rural area.
Ø A USDA Grant also made it possible to update our protection service by purchasing and installing two Emergency Sirens.
Ø Bids have been received and plans have begun for the construction of a new swimming pool. The 2010 swim season will end July 31, 2010 so that we may begin the demolition of the old pool and move right into the construction of a new swimming pool which is scheduled to be completed by Memorial Day, 2011.
Ø The George Betterment Club will be constructing a basketball court/ice skating rink on the property at West Ohio Street. A Community Foundation of Lyon County grant will help provide funding for this project.
Ø City officials have hired a contractor to repaint the water tower. This project will provide a fresh new look welcoming those coming into our community.
